At Curtin University’s Centre for Transformative Work Design, Christoffer Andersson, Annette Hallin and Chris Ivory, explored why advanced digital technologies in healthcare often fail to meet expectations once they meet everyday clinical practice.

Drawing on 12 hospital case studies across four European sites, the discussion highlighted a recurring pattern: challenges are rooted in the way technology meets established work routines. Systems frequently assume simplified workflows, while clinicians must adjust their practice to fit rigid design assumptions. Value tends to emerge only when tools are embedded within wider organisational systems that reflect real working conditions.

There is the need to look beyond individual tools and towards the broader system in which work is coordinated and delivered.
